ABOUT THE COURSE
Fire incidents can cause serious harm to people, property, equipment and business operations. Professional fire service personnel therefore require technical knowledge, physical preparedness and practical skills to respond effectively to emergencies.
The MSBTE Diploma in Fire Service Engineering provides systematic education in the principles and practices of fire services. Students learn about fire behaviour, combustion, fire hazards, fire prevention, fire protection systems, fire-fighting equipment, emergency procedures, rescue techniques, fire investigation and industrial safety.
The programme also develops practical understanding through fire-fighting drills, equipment exercises, rescue activities, field work, internship/project work and practical demonstrations.
This course can be a suitable choice for students who want to pursue opportunities in fire services, industrial fire safety, construction safety, emergency response, fire protection and HSE-related fields.
The current MSBTE FR programme is structured across four semesters. The syllabus includes technical subjects as well as practical fire-fighting and rescue training.
SEMESTER 1
Fire Engineering Science – I
Students are introduced to the scientific principles behind fire and combustion. Topics include fire chemistry, properties of combustible materials, fire behaviour, fire propagation, smoke movement, fire dynamics, extinguishing principles and basic fire hydraulics.
Fire Service Organisation – I
This subject introduces the organisation and functioning of fire services. Students learn about the roles and responsibilities of fire service personnel, management functions, safety education, documentation, communication and emergency organisation.
Fire Safety – I
Students learn the fundamentals of fire safety, fire prevention, fire risk identification, safety inspections, fire safety arrangements and measures used to reduce the likelihood and consequences of fire.
Special Fire Hazards – I
This subject focuses on unusual and high-risk fire situations associated with industries and hazardous materials. Students learn about special hazards, their characteristics, prevention measures and appropriate fire protection approaches.
Fire Fighting Drills – I
Students develop basic practical fire-fighting skills through drills involving fire appliances, hoses, hydrants, ladders and related fire-fighting procedures.
The MSBTE scheme specifically identifies Fire Engineering Science-I, Fire Service Organisation-I, Fire Safety-I, Special Fire Hazards-I and Fire Fighting Drills-I in the first semester.
SEMESTER 2
Fire Engineering Science – II
The second level of fire engineering science develops further understanding of fire behaviour, fire protection principles, fire hydraulics and technical aspects of fire-fighting.
Fire Service Organisation – II
Students study advanced aspects of fire service organisation, administration, emergency management, responsibilities and operational procedures.
Fire Safety – II
This subject develops knowledge of fire safety assessment, prevention and protection measures for different types of buildings and workplaces.
Special Fire Hazards – II
Students study fire risks associated with special industries and hazardous materials and learn appropriate prevention and protection measures.
Fire Fighting Drills – II
The practical training develops further competency in fire-fighting operations, hose and hydrant drills, fire appliances, pumps, ladders and emergency response activities.
MSBTE's current FR scheme identifies Fire Engineering Science-II, Fire Service Organisation-II, Fire Safety-II, Special Fire Hazards-II and Fire Fighting Drills-II for Semester 2.
SEMESTER 3
Fire and Electrical Audits
Students learn the fundamentals of conducting fire and life-safety audits, identifying deficiencies and recommending appropriate corrective and preventive measures. Electrical fire risks and safety inspection principles are also covered.
Fire Investigation
This subject introduces the principles of investigating fire incidents. Students learn about fire development, evidence, fire-scene procedures, causes of fire and basic fire investigation methodology.
Fire Fighting Equipment – I
Students study different types of fire-fighting equipment, their applications, operating principles, inspection and maintenance requirements.
Rescue Techniques – I
This subject introduces search and rescue principles, emergency evacuation, rescue equipment, rescue procedures and safe methods of assisting people during emergencies.
The published FR curriculum identifies Fire and Electrical Audits, Fire Investigation, Fire Fighting Equipment-I and Rescue Techniques-I in Semester 3.
SEMESTER 4
Fire Fighting Equipment – II
Students develop further knowledge of fire-fighting equipment, appliances and operational procedures used during emergency response.
Rescue Techniques – II
Advanced rescue concepts, emergency operations and practical rescue activities are covered to improve the student's ability to respond safely during emergency situations.
Project
Students undertake a fire-service or fire-safety-related project that allows them to apply technical knowledge to a practical problem or workplace situation.
Fire Training
The programme includes dedicated fire training to strengthen practical understanding of fire-fighting operations, emergency procedures and the use of fire-service equipment.
The current published FR curriculum identifies Fire Fighting Equipment-II, Rescue Techniques-II, Project and Fire Training in Semester 4.

DIPLOMA IN FIRE SERVICE ENGINEERING – FINAL CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION▾
The Diploma in Fire Service Engineering uses a combination of theory, progressive/internal assessment and practical assessment.
Students may be evaluated through:
- Theory Examination: Written examinations covering the technical concepts and subjects taught during the semester.
- Progressive Assessment: Class tests, assignments and other academic activities may contribute to internal assessment according to the applicable MSBTE scheme.
- Practical Examination: Practical skills may be assessed through demonstrations, drills, equipment operations, exercises and other practical activities.
- Project Assessment: The final-semester project is evaluated according to the applicable MSBTE assessment requirements.

ELIGIBILITY
- According to MSBTE's published approved nomenclature, candidates seeking admission to the Diploma in Fire Service Engineering (FR) may be eligible if they have:
- Passed H.Sc. (12th) examination of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education or an equivalent qualification; OR
- Passed any trade of ITI of 2 years' duration.
- Admission should be made according to the current MSBTE eligibility and admission requirements applicable to the academic session.
